As the ABC veteran show heads into its seventh season, Once Upon a Time is going to look a little different. New faces, new places, new curse. The show is rebooting into something we’ve never seen before.
The season 6 finale teased a bit what the new season might bring. From the looks of things, it seemed as though the story was resetting and we would get another version of the original. Henry opens the door to find a 10-year- old daughter he didn’t know about, claiming he needed to come save his family.
Sound familiar? Of course it does, because that was the exact premise of the pilot.
However, Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis told TVLine that they are not doing a re-do of the pilot. Unlike the first episode, the season 7 opener will not be about the curse. We won’t find out how or when it was cast until later on in the season. They’re taking a new angle with this season, one that includes a new group of characters — recently announced that Mekia Cox (Tiana) was promoted to series regular — and a new city, Hyperion Heights.
The characters we know and love will have cursed personas, similar to season 1 of the show. Regina (Lana Parrilla) will be known as bar owner Roni, Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) will be policeman Rodgers, and Rumple’s name has yet to be disclosed.
The three returning cast members will team up with Adult Henry and his daughter to fight a new villain — Lady Tremaine (Gabrielle Anwar). Similar to how Lana Parrilla brought a human element to the Evil Queen, Adam Horowitz says that Anwar is doing the same with Lady Tremaine. Maybe she’s not all that evil after all, and just needs a little love in her life?
Speaking of love, rumor has it that a certain Evil Queen might be getting a new love interest. Regina/Roni may get a B-story with a special someone, yet to be confirmed. This won’t be the central element of her story, though. Her most important relationship, throughout this entire series, has been with her son and that’s not changing this season. This relationship will be different seeing as her cursed persona doesn’t remember her son.
